UKABP members have suggested that it would be interesting and useful to conduct an informal survey of what different braille producers’ charge. To this end we have devised a very simple questionnaire related to four typical transcription requests: a bank statement, a newsletter, a novel and a text book – with a different customer for each one. We are not asking you to do the actual transcription, but simply to give us an estimate of what you might charge for each job and how long you think it would take. If it is not the kind of job you would take on, you can say so. We expect the prices quoted to be as varied as the UK’s braille producers! Obviously a voluntary transcriber with no overheads will charge less than a commercial producer who needs to cover costs and hopes to make a profit. We will let readers of this magazine know the highest, the lowest and the average price quoted for each job and we hope this will enable to you to form some conclusions as to how your prices compare with those of other producers. The results of the survey will only be published in the joint UKABP/COTIS newsletter or sent on request in future to members who are braille producers. We will not put the results on any websites or use them to inform potential customers. No producer will be identified in any way in the published results. This exercise will not work unless quite a lot of braille producers take part! The questionnaire should only take a few minutes of your time and your answers can be approximate. Completed questionnaires should be returned by the end of March. |
